I really enjoyed Gary Vaynerchuk’s book – Crush it! In the book, Gary walks through a modern day approach to personal branding and online money making. It’s really inspiring and will definitely get some good ideas sparking for anyone who reads it!

PVC Fence V.S. Wood Fence

Many of you are wondering what the benefits of PVC (also known as vinyl fence) are.  Ever since their inception in the 1980’s PVC fences are becoming more and more popular and are slowly taking over as the preferred choice in fencing.  Although wood is still more cost effective, PVC does not rot or warp over time.  PVC fence is environmentally friendly and will last a lifetime.

What are the major differences between wood and PVC fence?

1)  PRICE: The cost to have Wood fence professionally installed will cost between $11.50-$14 per foot depending on the size of your fence, the area you live, and the contractor you select.  PVC on the other hand will cost between $17.50-$25 per foot also depending on geographic location and contractor.  Now if you want to build it yourself you can save alot of money.  Wood fence and PVC fence are two of the easiest styles of fence to install.  For about $9 a foot you can purchase all the materials for wood and for about $13-$16 a foot you can purchase all the materials for PVC / Vinyl fence.

WINNER - WOOD FENCE

2)  DURABILITY:  PVC fences often carry lifetime warranties.  When purchasing materials from a fence compnay look to make sure the warranty is for life. Stay away from HOME DEPOT or LOWES.  The fences they supply will cost you up to 60% more and will not be as high quality as one you may find from a local fence company.  PVC is designed and built to last forever.  It will not rot and decay or bow and crack, split or discolor.  Wood on the other hand will begin to deteriorate after a few years and within 10-15 years your once new beautiful fence will look horrible.

WINNER - PVC FENCE

3)  PURPOSE - Both fences can be built for privacy or as picket fences to increase your property value.  Both fences can be built from 36” up t o 8’ tall.  It is completely up to you on the style you select.  If your purpose is to create an inexpensive way to add privacy to your home and you do not care so much of how your fence will look in 10 years then wood is the way to go.  If you don’t mind spending a little extra for a fence that will last forever and you plan on staying in your home for more than 10 years then I would reccomend PVC.

WINNER - TIE

So there you have it, both have benefits and both are a matter of personal preference.

Chain Link Fence Material Estimator

Same concept, same site as my previous wood fence estimator. Hoover is a great recource for fence companies as well as public do-it-your selfers who need to quickly and accurately figure the materials they will need to install a fence.

Wood Fence Estimator

This is a great tool that we use all the time when installing fences.  It is simple to use. All you have to do is input the length of each run for your fence and add in your gates.  It will calculate what you need to build your fence!  Great stuff right?
